PGA Golf Tournaments

The weather is beginning to warm up, spring is in the air, and it is that time of the year again for the world of golf to get back into the “swing of things”. There are six major tournaments occurring in the next few weeks to include three PGA tournaments, the HSBC Women’s Champions, the Masters Tournament, and the Maybank Malaysia Open. The first PGA Tour event is the 75th annual Waste Management Phoenix Open.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open

The Waste Management Phoenix Open, PGA Tour, begins on the 25th of February and ends on the 28th. The four Qualifiers for the 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open played earlier on Monday, February 22 at McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ. Two local amateurs made the field. The Qualifiers are as follows:

67 – Philip Francis (amateur) from Scottsdale, AZ. Junior at UCLA
68 – Braxton Marquez (amateur) from Scottsdale, AZ. Senior at Arizona State University
68 – Bret Guetz (professional) from Fresno, California
68 – Ben Fox (professional) from Sherman Oaks, California

The “Go for the Green” challenge at the 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open will be held on the famed par-3, 16th hole with a four-round closest-to-the-pin contest. Waste Management will donate $25,000 to “Keep America Beautiful” in the winning player’s name. Fifty percent of the proceeds will be directed towards the local “Keep Phoenix Beautiful” chapter and 50 percent will go to “Keep America Beautiful National” Think Green Grant.

The HSBC Women's Champions

The HSBC Women’s Champions begins on the 25th of February and ends on the 28th. The world’s top ten players will be in Singapore to compete for the coveted ‘Champion of Champions’ title. Leading the challenge at the Champions are the world’s top two players from the 2009 season Lorena Ochoa (1) of Mexico and Jiyai Shin (2) of Korea. The remaining eight players in the top ten are as follows: Scandinavian’s Suzann Pettersen (3) and Anna Nordvqist (4), America’s compatriots Cristie Kerr (5), Paula Creamer (7), Angela Stanford (9), and Michele Wie (10).

A total of 63 players will tee-off for four days of stroke play at TMCC. Two sponsor invitees along with Singaporean amateur Joey Poh, who won the two day Local Qualifying event earlier this month, will be joining the battle.
