Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday and Zero – the Project to End Prostate Cancer Unite to Raise Awareness and Funding for Research

October 7, 2010, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday, along with Zero – the Project to End Prostate Cancer, announced today that it will sponsor “Closest to the Pin” contests at more than 25 Myrtle Beach golf courses each Saturday throughout the month of October. Proceeds will benefit the Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer campaign.

The Myrtle Beach area golf courses that are participating in the weekly contests include: Aberdeen Country Club; Azalea Sands; Black Bear; Blackmoor; Brunswick Golf Club; Burning Ridge; Carolina National; Crown Park; Founders Club; King’s North, Southcreek and West courses at Myrtle Beach National; Indian Wells; Indigo Creek; Island Green; Leopard’s Chase; Litchfield Golf and Country Club; Long Bay Club; Pawleys Plantation; River Club; River’s Edge; River Oaks; Sandpiper Bay; Wachesaw East; Waterway Hills; Whispering Pines; Wicked Stick; Wild Wing Plantation; Willbrook Plantation; and Woodland Valley.

During October, participating golf courses will select one par three hole for the closest to the pin contest each Saturday. For $10, golfers will get one shot to win a prize. If any single shot rests within three feet of the selected contest hole on any participating golf course, the golfer will win a new putter from Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. Each golfer participating in the contest will receive a sleeve of golf balls and any golfer scoring a hole-in-one wins $1,000.

“We encourage everyone playing one of the participating ‘Closest to the Pin’ golf courses each Saturday in the fall to take part in the weekly contest,” said Bill Golden, president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. “Myrtle Beach is known as the ‘Golf Capital of the World’ and we see more than one million golfers here per year, most of which are the exact Zero demographic, men who are 45 years of age and older. This is an excellent opportunity to have fun playing a game we love, and to do so for a very worthy cause.”

Each Saturday, the contests will be administered by Atlantic Golf Promotions to ensure fairness and accuracy of the weekly results, and to assist in raising money for the Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer campaign. Since April of 2008, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday has joined forces with Zero and supported the annual campaign to fight prostate cancer. The “Know Your Score” campaign slogan refers to the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test given to men 50 years of age or older to help detect prostate cancer. A low score on the PSA test is good news and is the best screening tool currently available when used with the physical prostate exam, according to Zero.

With the support of the entire Myrtle Beach golf community, more than $250,000 has been raised over the last three years for prostate cancer research through closest-to-the-pin contests at area golf courses, a celebrity golf tournament and silent auction and fundraisers held at the World Amateur Handicap Championship. Additionally, Zero brought their 40-foot “Drive Against Prostate Cancer Mobile Screening RV” to Myrtle Beach this past July, and twice in 2008, and provided free prostate screens for more than 750 men. A typical prostate cancer screening at a doctor’s office could cost as high as $200.
